Square Enix has announced a full 3D remake of its 1995 role-playing game, Romancing SaGa 3, titled Destinies United. The upcoming title is set to launch on February 16, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. This new version promises a significant visual and mechanical overhaul, including upgraded graphics and fully voiced cutscenes.
The game's narrative unfolds in a world plagued by a recurring calamity known as the Rise of Morastrum, an event that occurs every 300 years and results in the destruction of all newborn life except for a single "Child of Destiny." Players will guide eight distinct protagonists, each with their own motivations, on a quest to discover this survivor amidst the scheduled despair.
Destinies United will retain the original game's emphasis on player choice and character recruitment. Over 20 additional characters can be met and recruited, each possessing unique stats and abilities. These characters can be further customized through the Nonastrum system, where players assign a "star of fate" that influences their affinity for specific abilities and spells. The Freeform Scenario System ensures that player decisions actively shape the characters encountered and the unfolding narrative.
Combat in Romancing SaGa 3 has also been revised. Characters will have the ability to "glimmer" new techniques, develop evasion skills, and perform powerful United Attacks in battle. Returning features from the original include War Mode, allowing players to command armies, and the Business minigame, where players can build a trading empire.
The SaGa series, which began in 1989 with the Game Boy title, is recognized for its pioneering approach to open-world exploration and non-linear storytelling. Square Enix released a remake of another entry, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, in 2024, continuing the franchise's legacy.
