Wanderburg, a novel take on the burgeoning bullet heaven genre, has launched into early access today. The game casts players as the controller of a unique vehicle: a modular medieval castle mounted on tank treads. Developed by Randwerk, Wanderburg challenges players to survive waves of enemies using offensive and defensive castle modules.
The core gameplay loop involves leveling up and expanding the player's mobile fortress. Growth is facilitated by collecting resources, which can be acquired through various means, including absorbing livestock like sheep and cattle, or by conquering rival fortresses. As players progress, they can attach new modules to their castle-tank, which can range from barracks to spawn troops to powerful weaponry like a giant hammer.
Player choice extends to the vehicle's locomotion, with options to switch between wheels and even legs, giving the castle a distinct, bouncy movement. The game's visual style emphasizes a precarious construction, with the castle appearing to constantly teeter on the brink of toppling.
Wanderburg enters early access with its core mechanics established, but developer Randwerk plans to expand the game over the next six to 12 months. Future additions will include more content and adjustments based on community feedback. The game is available now on Steam.
