Cynthia Erivo, known for her role as Elphaba in the film adaptation of Wicked, has been cast as Afeni Shakur in the forthcoming Snoop Dogg biopic, titled Snoop. Filming for the movie commenced in September 2026, with Jonathan Daviss taking on the role of a young Snoop Dogg.

Afeni Shakur, the mother of Tupac Shakur, was a prominent activist and a member of the Black Panther Party. Following her son's death in 1996, she established the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation to support young artists and founded Amaru Entertainment to release his posthumous music. Tupac and Snoop Dogg's collaboration began around the time of the 1993 film Poetic Justice, and they later worked together on tracks for Tupac's album All Eyez on Me.

Erivo previously spoke about her selective approach to acting roles, stating in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she relies on an "internal metronome" to determine what is right for her, leading her to decline many opportunities.

The movie Snoop is scheduled to be released on August 6, 2027.
