DC Studios has reportedly enlisted Francis Galluppi, writer and director of the upcoming Evil Dead Wrath, to pen a new Constantine movie. This development, reported by Deadline, suggests a fresh direction for the character on screen, potentially indicating that the long-in-development Constantine 2 may have been shelved.
John Constantine, the chain-smoking occult detective known for his wit and supernatural prowess, has seen multiple live-action interpretations. Keanu Reeves famously starred in the 2005 film Constantine, with Matt Ryan later taking on the role in a 2014 NBC series and voicing the character in animated projects. While the NBC series was short-lived, the 2005 film has maintained a dedicated following.
Development on a sequel to the Reeves film has been protracted, with reports surfacing last year that Keanu Reeves himself was unhappy with the script. Despite confirmations of discussions between Reeves and DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, the project faced numerous hurdles.
Galluppi's background includes work on short films and music videos, with his feature directorial debut being The Last Stop in Yuma County in 2023. His subsequent selection by Sam Raimi to helm Evil Dead Wrath highlights his experience in horror and supernatural genres, making him a potentially fitting choice for a Constantine project. Details regarding a director or cast for the new Constantine movie remain undisclosed as the project is in its early stages.
