Gandalf's journey in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to take a significant turn in season 3, with the character evolving beyond his initial struggles with identity and magical prowess. Actor Daniel Weyman, who portrays Gandalf, explained that the upcoming season will emphasize the wizard's understanding of his true calling: not to wield immense power, but to foster goodness and courage in others.

After a five-year time jump following season 2, Gandalf is beginning to embody the wise and guiding figure known from the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Weyman shared that Gandalf's time with Tom Bombadil has instilled a more nuanced perspective on power. "He's not so eager to control everything and is more willing to understand that his journey is about being present with people, seeing their goodness, and reflecting it back to them," Weyman stated in a Prime Video featurette. This approach focuses on inspiring heroism in ordinary individuals, a hallmark of the character's later appearances.

The transformation is also visible in Gandalf's appearance, with Weyman noting his growing hair and beard, a changed costume, and a constant companion in his staff, which now seems to serve a role akin to a friend. This shift reflects a deeper understanding of his mission as an Istari—a spirit sent to Middle-earth to guide and advise, rather than to dominate. This contrasts with figures like Sauron, whose goal is control, aligning with Tolkien's mythology where wizards encourage others to resist evil.

Season 3 will also delve into Gandalf's complicated history with the dark wizard Pallando, played by Ciarán Hinds. Pallando, associated with the eastern lands of Rhûn, shares a forgotten past with Gandalf. "Gandalf realizes they have history, and it's gotten lost in the mist of time about who they are, what their mission is," Hinds commented. Gandalf's approach to this reunion will test his newfound philosophy, as his instinct is to help a lost friend find his way back rather than engage in direct conflict.

Ciarán Hinds as the “Dark Wizard,” sitting on a stone throne, with an impressively topped staff at his side. He wears grey robes and has a long grey beard streaked with black.

The Rings of Power co-creator Patrick McKay emphasized that Gandalf is now embracing his role as a wizard, marking a pivotal stage in his long life. The core conflict in season 3 is described as more "esoteric" than a typical magical duel, focusing on Gandalf's mission to "see the goodness in others" and "rekindle hearts that have gone cold." This new direction for Gandalf centers on his ability to inspire, a more challenging endeavor than simply wielding magic, and will explore whether he can guide others to fulfill their potential against the growing darkness in Middle-earth.
