Final Fantasy 14's upcoming expansion, Evercold, is set to address pacing criticisms that arose with the Dawntrail expansion. Director Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P, stated in an interview that the development team is giving "serious consideration on the sense of tempo" for Evercold.

Dawntrail, the first part of Final Fantasy 14's new story arc, faced player feedback regarding its pacing. Yoshida explained that the main questline devoted too much time to developing new lands and cultures, which could feel slow for players eager to progress the narrative. To rectify this, a number of world-building elements have been moved from the main scenario quest to side quests in Evercold. This allows players to engage with these elements at their own pace after they have advanced the main story.

Yoshi-P also indicated that this adjustment aligns with the team's broader goal of being more considerate of players' time. However, the article notes a potential concern that this could overcorrect, risking the loss of some of the storytelling depth that defines Final Fantasy 14's extensive narrative.

Evercold is scheduled for release on February 23, 2027, a slight delay from its initial January window. Ahead of the expansion's launch, Yoshida offered general advice for players looking to prepare. Instead of recommending specific quest lines, he suggested players refamiliarize themselves with the concept of the shards and the origin of the universe's division. This refers to the lore where the original world was split into fourteen shards during a conflict between celestial beings, a concept central to the game's ongoing narrative.

For those who prefer a brief recap, Final Fantasy 14's universe began as a single world. The ongoing conflict between Hydaelyn and Zodiark led to this world fracturing. The Warrior of Light has been instrumental in dealing with Zodiark and uncovering the history of the original world, having visited several shards in the past. Evercold will introduce the Warrior of Light to another alternate world facing its own unique challenges.
