Grand Theft Auto 6 may already be positioning itself as one of the best-selling games of the year, weeks before its official global launch. Data firm Sensor Tower claims that pre-orders alone have reached approximately 7.71 million copies, generating an estimated $751 million in revenue.
According to Sensor Tower's sales tracker, around 74 percent of these pre-orders are for the PlayStation 5 version, with the remaining 26 percent on Xbox Series X/S. This breakdown shows 5.74 million copies pre-ordered on PS5 compared to 1.97 million on Xbox. The report suggests that Sony's marketing campaign for GTA 6, coupled with the PS5's lower price point, may have contributed to this console sales disparity.
To provide context, Sensor Tower's estimated pre-order sales for GTA 6 are close to the reported 8 million total pre-orders for Cyberpunk 2077 leading up to its 2020 launch. This figure also places GTA 6 ahead of Resident Evil 4 Remake's estimated 8.5 million sales, which has made it the second best-selling game of 2026 in the U.S. so far.
Analysts are projecting even higher numbers for the game's launch window. Piper Sandler predicts total sales of 45 million units, a figure that would surpass the $800 million GTA 5 grossed in its first 24 hours. These projections indicate that GTA 6 is expected to be the biggest game launch in history.
