JSAUX, known for its Steam Deck accessories, has released new faceplate screens for the Steam Machine, offering pre-built E-Ink and PixelMatrix options. These alternatives aim to be more accessible and versatile than Valve's open-source Inkterface project or custom solutions found on platforms like Etsy.
The two new faceplates provide different aesthetic and functional approaches. The E-Ink model features a crisp, black-and-white display, while the PixelMatrix offers a more colorful, retro-style appearance with lower detail density. Both integrate with SteamOS through the Decky Loader plugin tool, allowing users to switch between various display modes. JSAUX states that the necessary software will be available directly through Steam by early October, simplifying setup for users without DIY modding experience.
During testing, the E-Ink panel was found to be functional for tasks like digital photo display due to its higher detail. However, its refresh rate, limited to once per minute, makes it less suitable for real-time performance monitoring. The PixelMatrix, despite its lower resolution, was preferred for performance monitoring due to its faster refresh capabilities and the ability to display colors, such as in its weather view. It also proved less effective for detailed image display, with pictures of pets appearing heavily pixellated.
Minor drawbacks were noted for both models, including slight misalignments at the edges and a USB-C port placement on the E-Ink model that can cause cable strain. The 'FPS counter' on the performance monitor was also found to be misleading, displaying the monitor's refresh rate rather than actual in-game frame rates. However, the E-Ink screen's refresh process was observed to be faster and less distracting than Valve's own Inkterface design.
JSAUX's ready-made screens offer a variety of pre-programmed modes out of the box, including performance tracking, clock, weather, and photo frame options, which exceed the single-screen functionality typically achieved with Valve's Inkterface. Crucially, both JSAUX faceplates come in at a lower price point than assembling a comparable DIY solution. The E-Ink model is priced at $100, and the PixelMatrix at $90. When factoring in component costs and potential 3D printing expenses for Valve's Inkterface, a DIY build can approach $104.50 or more, making JSAUX's offerings a comparatively cost-effective and convenient choice for Steam Machine owners looking to customize their device's front panel.
