Meta is set to release a new pair of VR glasses in Spring 2027, designed for enhanced portability and visual fidelity, though they come with a substantial $1,300 price tag. These glasses are presented as a lighter alternative to the company's existing Quest line.
Design and Technology
The Meta VR Glasses weigh approximately 100 grams, achieved through a tethered puck that houses the core technology. This unit contains a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite chipset, 128GB of storage, 12GB of RAM, and a battery. The glasses themselves feature 5K Micro OLED lenses, capable of a resolution of 2412 x 2288 pixels per eye and a 120Hz refresh rate. This setup allows for access to the Meta Quest catalog of apps and games, as well as support for Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Multimedia and Interaction
Meta has also emphasized the glasses' multimedia capabilities. They are "IMAX-Enhanced certified" and support Dolby Vision HDR, making them suitable for watching 3D movies. Users can interact with games using hand gestures or connect the glasses to a gaming console or handheld device as a secondary display. While controllers are not included by default, Meta Touch Plus controllers can be purchased separately, or existing Quest 3/3S controllers can be paired.
A notable feature is Meta's "Holograms" technology, which aims to create photorealistic avatars for virtual interactions. Similar to Apple Vision Pro's Personas, these avatars are intended for communication between Meta VR Glasses owners. Initially, Holograms will be rendered as flat stereoscopic video streams, with Meta planning future enhancements to evolve the system beyond current cartoon-inspired avatars.
Market Positioning and Alternatives
The $1,300 price point places Meta's VR Glasses significantly above the cost of current Meta Quest headsets. The portability is a key selling point, but for users primarily interested in high-tech glasses for media consumption or as a console accessory, alternatives like the Viture Beast and Pro 2 XR glasses offer comparable features at a lower cost. For those prioritizing VR gaming and willing to invest in high-end hardware, Meta's new glasses may offer a compelling, albeit expensive, option, especially considering the existing library of VR titles and upcoming releases like High on Life. The market also features other premium VR devices, such as Valve's Steam Frame, which exceeds $1,000.
