Meta Unveils Lightweight VR Multimedia Headset, Targeting Spring 2027 Launch

Meta is gearing up to launch its next generation of virtual reality hardware, the Meta VR Glasses, with a planned release in Spring 2027. The device, which Meta claims will weigh just 100 grams, aims to carve out a niche as a lightweight multimedia consumption tool, though it will also support VR gaming.

Visually, the headset shares a resemblance with the Apple Vision Pro, notably featuring a separate tethered battery pack to achieve its slim profile. Powering the device is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite chip, paired with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, expandable via a microSD card. Meta states the headset will offer 2.4K micro-OLED screens, which the company describes as among its best visuals to date.

At launch, the Meta VR Glasses will support approximately 75 VR games, including hand-tracking compatible titles and a virtual reality port of the fifth Ace Attorney game. Additionally, the headset will offer access to Xbox Cloud Gaming through a controller. However, Meta is positioning the device primarily for multimedia experiences, with plans for services like Disney+ to support IMAX-resolution and 3D movie playback, alongside immersive sports viewing. Educational use, such as for homework, is also cited as a capability.

Meta appears to have addressed concerns regarding privacy, with the cameras for spatial augmented reality applications being more prominent than on previous Meta Glasses, intended to support more complex functionalities rather than discreet recording. The device is priced at $1299.

The success of the Meta VR Glasses may hinge on Meta's ability to attract consumers who have not yet invested in VR or AR technology, a challenge that also faced Apple's Vision Pro. The company's strategy relies on a lighter form factor and diverse entertainment options to persuade potential buyers to adopt the technology.
