SanDisk Rebrands WD SSD Line Under Optimus as Company Split Reshapes Branding

SanDisk is rebranding a slate of popular internal SSDs under a new Optimus lineup as Western Digital and Sandisk restructure their businesses. The shift moves drives that were once listed under WD labels into Sandisk’s Optimus family, but the underlying technology remains unchanged. The two companies were once a single entity, with Sandisk operating as a WD subsidiary; WD has since separated to focus on hard-disk drives, while Sandisk continues to push SSDs. The rebrand is presented as branding-only, with the core hardware and manufacturing partnerships largely intact, stemming from a long-running collaboration with Kioxia.

Under the Optimus banner, existing WD-branded drives will appear as Optimus models. For example, WD_Black SN7100 is slated to become Optimus GX 7100, and WD Blue SN5100 will be listed as Sandisk Optimus 5100. The lineup also includes Optimus GX Pro 850X, corresponding to the WD_Black SN850X. Public materials show images implying that WD_Black SN8100 will map to Optimus GX Pro 8100 as well.

Additionally, SanDisk announced a new, compact 2230-class drive, the Sandisk Optimus GX 7100M, offering up to 2 TB of capacity and advertised read speeds up to 7,250 MB/s. The brand's materials frame the Optimus family as engineered to meet the demands of professional workflows, gaming environments, and other prosumer use cases.

An official statement from Sandisk executive Anil Moolchandani reinforces the brand strategy: "Millions of people around the world know and trust our internal drives, and the new Sandisk Optimus branding perfectly matches the strength of our portfolio," he said in the press release. The company notes that a rebrand is a necessary step and, while it may erode some legacy WD recognition, it preserves the high-performance hardware users expect from the combined WD and Sandisk lineage. The core technology is described as coming from the Sandisk-Kioxia collaboration and remains unchanged.

Rollout will begin through the first half of 2026, with products under the new brand appearing across shelves and retailers as the Optimus family replaces WD-branded names. The underlying hardware remains largely the same, stemming from the Sandisk-Kioxia collaboration, and there is no change to core specifications beyond branding.

Consumers and retailers should monitor SKU changes and updated product pages as the transition unfolds in 2026. The move marks a strategic step to establish Sandisk’s standalone identity in the SSD market while preserving the performance pedigree associated with WD and Sandisk technologies.
