YouTube has announced a significant update to its policies regarding the disclosure of AI-generated content, aiming to provide users with clearer information about synthetic media. Responding to user feedback, the platform is moving AI disclosure labels for photorealistic and "meaningfully AI altered or generated" content to a more prominent position within the video interface.
For long-form videos, these AI warnings will now appear directly below the video player, situated above the video description. In the case of short-form content, the label will be presented as an overlay directly on the video itself. While the effectiveness of these labels in preventing misidentification is debated, YouTube is also introducing new internal systems to aid in the detection of AI-generated material.
While creators have been required to manually disclose the use of realistic AI in their content, the platform acknowledges that this is not always reliably followed. With the integration of new technology, YouTube will now be capable of automatically applying a label to content identified as having "significant photorealistic AI use."
YouTube states that creators will retain control over disclosures. If a creator believes their content has been incorrectly flagged as AI-generated, they will have the ability to update the disclosure status through YouTube Studio. However, disclosures will remain permanent in specific circumstances. These include content created using YouTube's proprietary AI tools, such as Veo or Dream Screen, and content that includes C2PA metadata confirming it was fully generated by AI.
The platform's stated goal is to "make it as easy as possible for creators and viewers to have the right information." This initiative arrives as concerns grow regarding the proliferation of AI-generated content and its potential impact on the authenticity of online media.
