France's Syndicat des Travailleureuses du Jeu Vidéo (STJV) union has accused Microsoft of deliberately sabotaging the development of Marvel's Blade, then using the resulting delays and costs as a pretext to close Arkane Lyon. The union asserts that work on Blade is proceeding well and is consistent with Arkane's previous acclaimed titles such as Dishonored, Prey, and Deathloop.

According to the STJV, Microsoft's decision to freeze hiring for 19 months artificially extended development timelines and increased costs. The union contends that Microsoft is now leveraging these self-inflicted issues to justify the studio's closure, a move they argue defies financial logic given the potential cost of closing Arkane versus allowing it to complete Blade. The union also stated that Arkane, while perhaps not profitable enough for Microsoft's current standards, is itself a profitable entity.

The STJV holds Microsoft responsible for the current predicament of both the studio and its employees, demanding the company assume full responsibility and act accordingly. While the union's preferred outcome is for Arkane to continue operating, they insist that if closure is inevitable, Microsoft must provide comprehensive support and compensation for the affected workers.

The union has put forth specific demands, including giving employees and unions a significant say in the selection of a potential buyer and establishing a protection fund for employees who may be dismissed by a new owner within two years. Should Arkane close, the STJV is seeking substantial compensation for employees, including a €200,000 redundancy payment, two years of redeployment support funded by Microsoft, and resources for training and studio creation with a residual bonus for all staff. They also demand compensation for independent workers facing contract breaches.

These demands are framed within the context of Microsoft's considerable financial resources, with the union highlighting the company's significant net income. The future of Arkane Lyon remains uncertain, having been affected by recent layoffs at Xbox. Reports suggest a potential acquisition by Ubisoft, but this remains unconfirmed. Xbox has been approached for comment on the STJV's demands.
